Patients speak about prostate cancer and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy

Joseph Morin, Rumsford ME

Joseph Morin

In 2006, I was a 72-year old retired nurse anesthetist. I had a PSA of 63/ml and they diagnosed me with bilateral prostate cancer.

I was offered hormone therapy and radiation or seeds. Having spent 40 years practicing anesthesia, I have to say here that I am not impressed with radiation. I chose hormone therapy and nothing else.

My daughter, an accountant at a South Florida hospital, told me doing nothing was not acceptable. She said there is a Dr. Krongrad nearby at Aventura Medical Center who brought in minimally invasive prostate surgery and I should go see him. That’s exactly what I did and was impressed with the response from Dr. Krongrad. His ladies, Ruth and Hope, are true angels.

Hope made all the arrangements for pre-op testing. I flew to Florida. Krongrad did my Davinci robotic prostatectomy and I went home to my daughter’s the next day. I had absolutely nothing for pain, not even Tylenol. One week after surgery, I flew back to Maine and 2 weeks after surgery I was kayaking on my favorite lake. I got my continence back quickly and now, 5 years later, I am still fully continent.

I would add that that my pathology showed a Gleason 9 prostate cancer with seminal vesicle invasion. Since surgery, my PSA has remained undetectable without any more treatment. I could not have asked for anything more.

I have dealt with many surgeons in my life as an anesthetist and I must say that Krongrad is not the typical surgeon. He is most caring, kind, pleasant and above all skilled. When you have your 1st appointment with him it’s like he has all the time in the world to spend with you. If your prostate has to go, Krongrad is the man to do the job.
