Common Questions: The Procedure
Who is a candidate for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy?
Anyone diagnosed with localized prostate cancer may benefit from laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. However, the decision to have a prostate cancer surgery revolves around numerous considerations, most importantly the severity of the prostate cancer and the severity of other illnesses. The following variables enter into preoperative evaluation: age, pre-biopsy PSA prostate-specific antigen levels, prostate biopsy findings, previous prostate cancer treatments, height and weight, other illnesses, smoking history, previous surgery, and current medications. Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy can be done for men of all sizes and shapes. One of our patients weighed 330 pounds; he was out for dinner at his favorite restaurant in three days, was fully continent in ten days, and is cancer free.
