Common Questions: The Procedure
I have a big prostate. Can I have laparoscopic radical prostatectomy?
Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy delivers a prostate whole, so in theory a prostate may be so big that it requires a very large incision to remove it. As a practical matter, prostate size is not much of an issue. We have used laparoscopic radical prostatectomy to remove prostates ranging in size from 10 to 180 ccs.
Generally speaking, laparoscopic prostate surgery is not considered a treatment for an enlarged prostate, for which there are several other treatment options. With that said, there are some situations in which LRP can be a suitable tool for the treatment of an enlarged prostate that does not have signs of prostate cancer.
